Does Meditation Actually Work?

( – Meditation has been around for thousands of years and has been practiced in many cultures. But can breathing deeply and quieting your mind really lower your stress and improve your cognitive function?

It turns out meditation does come with positive benefits, but consistency is key.

Brain scans during meditation show activity that reflects decreases in anxiety and depression. People who’ve been meditating for years also exhibit higher levels of empathy and improved numbers of brain waves associated with positivity and happiness. Studies have also found that meditation can change your brain shape and size. After eight weeks of implementing a meditation practice, gray matter in the brain is denser in the areas that focus on learning, emotional regulation and memory.

If you’ve started meditating but don’t feel like you’re noticing benefits yet, keep at it. The practice can improve your health and mood, but you have to stick with it. Namaste!
