How to Practice Emotional First Aid

In our culture, we approach physical and psychological injuries differently. While we’ll disinfect and slap a Band-Aid on a cut, we will pick at an emotional wound until it gets deeper and starts festering.

You see, the thing is that many of us don’t even pay any attention to our own emotional wellness and happiness. We push through the day sort of ignoring it all, and that allows things to pile up. Eventually, we break, and it’s much more difficult to turn things around.

If we all took more time to engage in good emotional hygiene, things wouldn’t get to that point quite as often — and that’s exactly the point made by Guy Winch in this TedTalk.

So, what does emotional hygiene really mean? Winch says it’s “Being mindful of our psychological health and adopting brief daily habits to monitor and address psychological wounds when we sustain them.”

It’s about actively working to stop obsessing over negative thoughts and situations to find a way forward. It’s seeking treatment for our traumas, reaching out to people we can trust, taking a mental health day now and again, and even just developing good habits around physical health and stress management.

It might not be easy, but it’s worth it. Because at the end of the day, good emotional hygiene — and mental “first aid” — will make it easier for you to succeed.
