How to Stop Procrastinating Now

( – Ah, procrastination — it’s the enemy of productivity and the battle we all fight in silence.

The struggle is real, and scientists have spent plenty of time studying procrastination to find out why we do it. Ultimately, it seems to come down to two factors: our executive function and our desire to avoid stressful situations.

So how do we combat procrastination on those days when it creeps up on us? Luckily, there are a few tactics that can help:

  • Break up the work. Seriously, you don’t need to try to do everything at once. You’ll burn out. Instead, try breaking the job up into pieces and rewarding yourself as you make progress.
  • Take advantage of your productivity. In all likelihood, you have certain times of the day when you’re more creative, more productive or more apt to be motivated. Use those times to accomplish your more complex projects so you can take on easier tasks when you’re feeling less energized.
  • Just do it. This strategy is probably the hardest because it means forcing yourself to work, regardless of how you feel. Sometimes, motivation is overrated, and you just have to do it. You may be surprised to find it seems a little easier after you get started!

We all procrastinate now and then. Beating it takes discipline, but you can do it. All you have to do is make the first move.
