7 Signs You’re the Toxic One

How to Avoid Becoming Toxic

(DailyProsper.com) – We live in a hectic world, and it’s easy to become self-absorbed amid all the stress and uncertainty. And despite our best efforts, sometimes that leads us to become a little toxic along the way. Self-help channel Psych2Go explains how to spot the telltale signs in this video:

Here’s the thing: no one wants to be toxic. But it’s really easy to fall into those maladaptive behaviors without even being aware of them. It often starts small, with a negative attitude or a little frustration, and builds until you’re totally drowning in negativity and can’t find your way out.

So what can you do?

  • Try to be less self-absorbed. Toxic people often get caught up in themselves. If you talk about yourself to the point that whoever you’re around feels inferior or bad about themselves, ask yourself if you need to dial it back. Are you giving back as much as you’re taking?
  • Put others first. To avoid being toxic, put others’ needs before yours. Ask your significant other what they want to do rather than what you want to do all the time. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should forget yourself – balance matters.
  • Tolerate differences in opinion. Do you always have to be right in a discussion? Love to argue until the cows come home? Refusing to acknowledge the other side of the argument can make you develop toxic tendencies. Try to be open minded and really listen to what other people have to say.
  • Take accountability. Chronic toxicity can be a sign of narcissism or even Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). That’s because most toxic people can’t or won’t hold themselves accountable. To counter and prevent this, be willing to admit your mistakes and accept responsibility. We all make mistakes!
