Are you a follower or more of a forge-your-own-path kind of person? There’s nothing wrong with marching to the beat of your own drum. It may sometimes be an issue when you do it in the workplace, but it can also be a good thing. Here are some reasons why it pays to be a rebel in the workplace and why you should keep doing it.
Admit When You Don’t Have the Experience
Your boss comes to you after being with the company for a while and asks you about tackling a new technical project. The problem is, you didn’t go to school for that.
Be honest! It’s important to admit that you don’t have that specific skill set. Instead of fudging the details, place emphasis on what you do know and how you’re willing to contribute. Make it clear that you’re willing to learn to get the job done and ask for support in doing it.
Sure, this isn’t exactly the most rebellious thing you can ever do, but there is a little bit of rebel heart in every self-assertive act. Just don’t forget to be a team player while getting the support you need.
Be a Take-Charge Employee
The boss is nowhere in sight. Everyone is sitting around waiting for instructions on getting started with a new project or job. Now is the time to be the rebel in charge and initiate a starting point.
It may seem like you’re stepping on the toes of upper management, but they should be glad you took the initiative to get the ball rolling. The important thing is that you start by leading by example. Do something and encourage others to help out too.
Go Against Your Co-Workers
It’s always important to have good morale in the workplace. And this starts with being friendly and cooperative with your co-workers. But there may be times when you need to look out for yourself.
Have the chance for a big promotion? Go for it. You shouldn’t be ashamed to ask for more work or get more overtime if you need it.
See another employee breaking company policies? Maybe other people are turning the other way and expecting you to do the same. You should report it. Your silence could come back to bite you in the future.
Make Improvement Recommendations to Management
Have a great idea that would benefit the company? Maybe you and another co-worker were discussing it, but they were too timid to bring it up to the boss.
Be a rebel and take charge. Tell management the idea. If you don’t think your co-worker will mind, be sure to give them credit where credit is due. It’s a win-win for everyone.
Put in the Extra Effort
Are you the one always willing to work a few minutes over each day? Or maybe you’re so passionate about your job that you volunteer to help out with extra projects on the weekends. Any special recognition you receive for this could make your fellow co-workers green with envy.
It’s okay that you’re a workaholic rebel. You’re making a good name for yourself, and your boss sees it too.
Sometimes to move up the corporate ladder, you need to be a bit rebellious at times. Put your independence skills to good use in the workplace. You’ll be surprised at how successful you can be.
