Is This The Best Way to Organize Your Desk?

The Best Way to Organize Your Desk

(DailyProsper.com) – For better or worse, the tidiness of your workspace can affect your level of productivity, your mood and how you feel about your work. Even the most naturally organized and tidy people among us can let papers pile up from time to time. Here are some tips for desk organization that will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the workday.

Have a Place For Everything

Clutter often creeps up on us because we just aren’t sure where to put things. Without designated places for different types of paperwork, you’re likely to leave these materials anywhere you can find space until you realize there’s no more space to occupy. Set yourself up for success by establishing folders or drawers for certain documents and make sure to file papers away appropriately.

Stop Avoiding the Hard Stuff

Another way clutter accumulates is through procrastination or avoidance. Typically, if you don’t want to do something, it’s easy to tuck it away in a corner of your desk and hope to forget about it instead of dealing with it. Take care of the hard stuff sooner rather than later, and you’ll lighten your load.

Get Rid of What You Don’t Need

Even with the perfect filing system, there’s a limit to the amount of paperwork you can hang on to before you’ve reached max capacity. Establish a timeframe for the files you plan to keep and make a practice of shredding or discarding old documents to make room for new ones.

Do What Works For You

While some people may need a spotless desk to feel relaxed and able to concentrate, others may process visually and need to physically see their to-do list or projects in front of them. The goal of a well-organized desk is not necessarily to make your workspace completely clear, but to establish systems of organization that work for you and allow you to find the tools and materials you need when you need them.

Make Organization a Continual Practice

Chances are, even with effective organization strategies in place, you’ll need to revisit your systems periodically to make sure they still meet your needs. Take some time once a quarter to assess your organization practices and make adjustments as needed.

How your workspace is set up can affect how well you do your work, so having some system of organization will likely serve you well. However, it doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Take the time to figure out what works best for you and stick with it.
